Demo 1: iRiver + Audacity + Blog

This demo covers quick recording with a small, portable (affordable) MP3 recorder, and some basic editing in Audacity to generate an MP3 file. We will load it to a web site (either via FTP to my own server if pressed for time, or saved to OurMedia), create a new entry in a Blogger web site, and see how the podcast is updated.

In this demo, we will use the free site Odeo to record a short audio file using its web based audio recorder. In addition, we will see how audio can be recorded with a cell phone calling into Odeo. We can use Odeo's site to generate the podcast feeds or we can add it to the one we started in Demo 1. Odeo Demo Site web sitepodcast feed

Odeo also offers a clickable button that can be to send a web recorded message to someone with an Odeo account.

Cole Camplese at Penn State University is using Odeo with his IST 110: Information, People, and Technology course. The course information is posted in a weblog, and in Discussion Activity 2, he asks his students to use Odeo to record their responses to a required reading. They then need to provide a link to their audio as a comment to his blog entry. See:

A 3 minute limit for the audio required the students to carefully craft their remarks. According to Cole:

That was the number one comment I got from my students — “3 minutes was too short, but it made us think and work harder.” That is where the good stuff happens. BTW, this was the second “Discussion Activity” we did during the semester and my TA and I noted a couple of things, more students did the audio version, the scores were generally higher on them, and this is the one that stunned me, my TA said the audio was much easier (and faster) to grade. We are going to have them post a response to two other questions like this and perhaps have them podcast a project status review. BTW, this is an introductory freshman course.

Demo 3: Maricopa ePortfolio

The Maricopa ePortfolio is a version of the software developed at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, and is open now for any Maricopa faculty, staff, or student who wishes to create an electronic ePortfolio. Among its features are the ability to strem uploaded audio and video content and to automatically create podcast feeds for these items. The type of page to create is a Collection Page, and each item can be the uploaded media and its description.

To locate the podcast feed, click the "Subscribe" link from any eportfolio, find the Collection that contains the audio/video content. The link for XML is the podcast web address.
